Following a lengthy illness, Carolyn D. (Miller) Keyes, 82, of Harrisburg, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at The Gardens in Camp Hill.
She was born October 7, 1935 in Hagerstown, Maryland. Following the death of her first husband, David E. Davis, Sr., Carolyn met and married Rudolph B. Keyes. Rudy’s work at Penn National Race Course brought them to Harrisburg and they lived on 15th Street until he passed away in 2010 and she ultimately entered a nursing home.
She was retired from the former Blue Shield (now Highmark).
Carolyn and Rudy loved to go to Saturday’s Market every weekend, and following his passing, she continued to go as long as her health allowed. She also loved baking and cooking for her family and friends and caring for her cat, Oscar. She was a life member of the Derry Street United Methodist Church, where she was chairman of the administrative board and a member of the Bair Sunday School Class.
Carolyn was well known to the citizens of Harrisburg, especially in the Allison Hill section. Outspoken and opinionated, you knew exactly where you stood with her. She loved sitting on her front porch, watching the people pass by, and continually did her part to keep her city clean. She was a life member of the South Allison Hill Residents Association; a member of the South Allison Hill Civic Club and the Harrisburg Maennerchor; was in charge of the Food Pantry at 15th and Drummond Streets; served as the treasurer of the Derry Street Senior Citizens; was extremely active in the Community Action Commission and was former secretary/treasurer for the Tri-County Housing Development Corporation. For many years, Carolyn also manned the CP Station for the Harrisburg City Police Department. She was an integral part of the community’s Weed and Seed program which involved a multi-pronged approach to crime, drug problems and revitalization in neighborhoods.
For her continual service and dedication to her community, Carolyn received numerous civic and distinguished service awards from the city government.
Surviving is her son, David E. Davis, Jr. and his family; her dear friends, Lorraine Peterson and Mabel Oliphant; and many, many other friends and neighbors, all of whom will miss her greatly.
Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 29, 2018 at Kimmel Funeral Home, 2001 Market Street, Harrisburg with Pastor Mack Granderson officiating. Friends will be received from 10:00 AM until the time of services.
She will be buried with her beloved husband, Rudy, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Nobody’s Cats Foundation, 3909 Hartzdale Drive, Suite 309, Camp Hill, 17011.
