Donald Richard Shade, Sr.

Donald Richard Shade, Sr., 89, of Lower Paxton Township, passed away Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Lancaster General Hospital.

Born April 14, 1932 in Hummelstown, he was the son of the late Adam J. and Evelyn E. (Landis) Shade. Donald was retired from the Lower Paxton Township Highway Department and had worked for his father at the former Shade’s Nursery.

He was the widower of Dorothy J. (Weaver) Shade and was also preceded in death by his son: Donald R. Shade, Jr., his brother: Kenneth Shade, Sr., and a nephew: Charles “Bud” Shade.

He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, was a life member of the VFW Post 148, Harrisburg and was a member of the American Legion Post 730, Penbrook.

An avid racing fan, he enjoyed watching NASCAR, Sprint Cars and Indy Car racing. From working with his father at the nursery, Donald became skilled at landscape horticulture – identifying plants and trees and knowing when and where to plant them. He also liked hunting and fishing and restored his old Willy Jeep. Mostly, he loved being a father to his boys- watching their games, taking them along on fishing trips, and sharing his wisdom with them.

Surviving is his son: John A. Shade (and his wife, Shirley), Harrisburg; 2 grandchildren: Richard Shade and Kandy Shade; 9 grandchildren: Logan, Trevor, Allison, Dylan, David, Xavier, Nadia, Justin, and Dalton; 2 nephews: Kenneth Shade and Robert Shade (and their families); and many other family members.

Graveside services will be held 10:00 am Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville where Military Honors will be provided by the Marine Corps League.

Flowers should be omitted, and contributions in Donald’s memory may be made to the Marine Corps League, 2340 Ironville Pike, Columbia, PA 17512.
