Doris C. (McGee) Schory, aged 96, peacefully departed this life on Thursday, February 27, 2025, in the warmth of her home in Lower Paxton Township, where she had shared so many cherished moments.
Born on November 15, 1928, in Harrisburg, Doris was the beloved daughter of the late Stanley and Grace (Leibold) McGee. She graduated from Lower Paxton High School before pursuing her dream of nursing at Harrisburg Hospital's Nurse Training program. Doris dedicated her career to caring for others and retired as a respected nurse. Her kindness also extended to the youth at Camp YoliJwa, where she served as the camp nurse, nurturing countless children during their summer experiences.
A devoted member of the Harrisburg First Church of God, Doris served as a church deaconess and made history as the first woman Sunday School Superintendent. Her passion for her faith and community resonated deeply, and she touched many lives as a lay speaker for the Church of God Conference.
Doris was gifted with a beautiful voice that filled the church with joy. As a longtime soprano soloist in the choir and the lead singer of "The Abundant Life Quartet," she lifted spirits through her music. Music, travel, and walks brought her immense joy, reflecting her zest for life and the beauty of the world around her.
In 2011, Doris faced the profound loss of her beloved husband, Charles F. Schory, Jr., with whom she shared 64 wonderful years of marriage. She was preceded in death by her cherished daughter, Karen Schory, along with her brother Stanley McGee, Jr., her sister June Berkebile, and her dear companion of eight years, Bill Houck.
Doris leaves behind a loving legacy through her children: Steven C. Schory and his wife Helen from Shillington, Mark S. Schory and his wife Debra from Fayetteville, and Deborah M. Tsiris and her husband Johnny from Indiana. She will be lovingly remembered by her adoring grandchildren: Brandon Schory, Dana Gevedon and her husband Dove, Kiera Schory, and Carissa Tsiris and her husband Justin Chesney, as well as numerous family members, church community, and dear friends whose lives she enriched.
A service to celebrate Doris' remarkable life will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Kimmel Funeral Home, 2001 Market Street, Harrisburg, with Pastor G. Barry Stahl officiating. Friends are welcome to gather at the funeral home for an hour prior to the service. Doris will be laid to rest beside her cherished husband at Shoop’s Cemetery, where her memory will forever bloom in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
