Surrounded by his loved ones, Grant Michael Smith, 64, of Millersburg (formerly Harrisburg), passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Harrisburg Hospital.
Born December 18, 1951 in Harrisburg and a graduate of William Penn High School, he was the son of the late Gilbert and Lile (Bailets) Smith, and was also preceded in death by his brother, Gordon.
Better known as "Mike" or "Smitty", he was a former pipefitter for the Steel Mill and Shaul's. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #59, a social member of the American Legion Post #326, and attended the Lutheran Church, all in Millersburg.
Smitty loved shooting pool and riding his Harley back in the day; but mostly he enjoyed spending time with his friends. If you had a beer or shared a laugh with him, you had a friend for life. He was kind and generous and often put the needs of others before his own, never succumbing to self pity, even during his most difficult times. Funny and flirtatious, he kept his nurses and caregivers on their toes and laughing right up to the end.
Surviving are his children: Karen M. Morales (and her husband, Carlos), Harrisburg, Michelle L. Shirley (and her husband, Danny), Etters and Chad M. Smith (and his wife, Angela), Mechanicsburg; his three older brothers (who always called him "Beans"): Gilbert Smith (and his wife, Elizabeth), Mechanicsburg, Greg Smith, Johns Creek, Georgia and Gary Smith, Harrisburg; 5 grandchildren: Brian Lindsay, Jr., Mikayla Shirley, Danny Shirley, Jr., Chad Smith, Jr., and Austin Smith; and his former caregiver turned dedicated friend and forever his "angel", Nancy.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Kimmel Funeral Home, 2001 Market Street, Harrisburg. Friends will be received from 1:00 pm until the service time on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors, Inc., 1117 Country Club Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011 or to any agency which helps our service men and women when they return home.
