Jane Martin Brown, 89, Camp Hill, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Homeland Center, Harrisburg.
Born August 17, 1926 in Harrisburg, she was the daughter of the late Joseph B. and Marie (Verstraete) Martin and was also preceded in death by her step-mother, Vera Martin.
Jane was raised in Paxtang and Bellevue Park and graduated from John Harris High School. She and her sister, Eleanor Martin Allen, were well known as "The Martin Girls" in their neighborhood and in Mt. Gretna, where the family summered. Following graduation, she attended the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington, DC. A talented artist in several disciplines, Jane also received a teaching certificate in crewel and needlepoint from the Valentine Museum in Richmond, VA, and taught needlepoint in her home for years. She was a member of the Embroiderer's Guild of America.
Extremely active in the Girl Scouts of America, Hemlock Council, she was Chairman of the Council Cookie Sales and Director of the Arcona Girl Scouts Day Camp. She was also the founder of the first Girl Scout Troop for mentally and physically challenged girls in Camp Hill. She was a longtime member and former deacon of her church, Market Square Presbyterian Church; was a member of the Junior League, Civic Club of Harrisburg, Harrisburg Country Club, West Shore Country Club, the Harrisburg Art Club and the Mechanicsburg Art Club and served on the Management Board at Homeland Center.
In 1947, she married Arthur E. Brown, Jr., and until he passed away in 2001 they traveled often, with Brownie piloting their plane all over North America, the Caribbean and the Bahamas. She also loved dancing and entertaining friends, here and in Stuart, Florida.
In 2003, she married Albert S. Schmidt, Jr., who survives along with her children: Jody Boland (and her husband, Brian), Upper Saddle River, NJ and Naples, FL and David Brown (and his wife, Debra), Springfield, VA; her sister: Eleanor M. Allen, Harrisburg; two grandchildren: Matthew and Meghan Boland; and nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held 4:00 pm Sunday, June 26, 2016 at her church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg, 17101 where friends will be received from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
