Joan L. (Yingst) Haas, 84, formerly of Bellevue Park, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the Residence at the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg.
Joan was born on March 30, 1931, in Reading, Pennsylvania. She was the only child of the late I. Henry and Kathryn Yingst. Following her graduation from Reading High School, Joan went to work as an operator for Bell Telephone. She was transferred to Harrisburg in 1950. In 1958, she married Francis B. Haas, Jr., who passed away on April 18, 2015.
Joan lived in the Bellevue Park neighborhood ever since she moved to Harrisburg. She loved the neighborhood and the many special friendships she and Frank developed while there. She particularly enjoyed entertaining friends and relatives. The annual Haas Christmas open house was renowned in the neighborhood. Joan was sure to have a gift for every guest who showed up.
Joan also had a huge soft spot for animals, especially strays around the neighborhood. In fact, every pet she owned (and there were many, including Duke, Spanky, Froggy and Corky), had been strays in the neighborhood who luckily ended up at her doorstep, often lured by big bowls of food. She supported many animal rights and animal rescue charities.
Surviving are her two beloved sons: David R. Haas (and Jean Haas), Wilson, NC and Steven K. Haas (and Denean Bressi), Harrisburg; 2 grandsons: Dante Bressi and Marco Bressi; and many other family members and friends.
At Joan's request, there will be no formal service. Rather, in her honor and memory, donations may be made to The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, 7790 Grayson Road, Harrisburg, PA 17111, or to any other local organization dedicated to protecting and helping stray animals.
W. Orville Kimmel Funeral Home, Inc., Harrisburg, is handling arrangements.
