J. Wilson Bartley, 86, Curwensville and formerly of Altoona and Harrisburg, passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Penn Highlands Hospital, Clearfield.
Born June 27, 1930 in Altoona, he was the son of the late John E. Bartley, Sr. and Mildred (Kelly) Bartley and was a graduate of Altoona Area High School. In 1954 he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University. Following college, he joined the US Navy and was discharged after the Korean Conflict as a Lieutenant Junior Grade.
J. Wilson used his Architectural Landscaping education in his positions for various governments and was responsible for the landscape designs at many government buildings in Pennsylvania. In 1979 he retired from the State as the Assistant Bureau Director and Chief of the Community Planning Division.
He was baptized at St. John’s Catholic Church in Lakemont but became a long time member of St. Catherine Laboure Roman Catholic Church after moving to Harrisburg.
He joins in Heaven his beloved wife, Ann (Fogle) Bartley, who passed away in 2006 following 34 years of marriage. An eternal romantic, J. Wilson took his wife for dinner and dancing every Saturday night at the Hotel Hershey; and weekly gave her a rose dipped in gold. In one of these roses, he eventually inserted an engagement ring and spent many years in blissful marriage.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, John E. Bartley, Jr.
Although he and Ann had no children, he leaves behind many loving family members. His survivors include his sister, Helen L. Bartley, Ft. Myers, FL; sister-in-law, Marian Woodeschick, Houston, TX; nieces and nephews, Sherrie (and husband, David) Walter, John (and wife, Pam) Woodeschick, Charyl (and husband, Terry) Oakes, Jacklyn (and husband, John) Kephart, Bryan (and wife, Pam) Bartley, Gregory (and wife, Faith) Bartley, and Jonathan (and wife, Linda) Bartley; his godson, Lucas J. Bartley; and many friends, all of whom will miss him greatly.
Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Monday, April 17, 2017 at Resurrection Cemetery.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Discovery Garden, a project of the Skills Foundation, 341 Science Park Road, Suite 6, State College, PA 16803.
