At the age of 101 years, LaRue B. (Bowers) Hyde, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, September 21, 2019 while a resident at Ephrata Manor, Ephrata.
Born March 10, 1918 in Rossiter, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Kathryn (Cassidy) Bowers. In 1935 she graduated from Rossiter High School in the heart of the bituminous coal region in Indiana County and furthered her education by graduating in 1937 from Indiana Business College.
After turning 21 in 1939, she made the move from a small coal town to the “big city” of Harrisburg, all the while still trusting and believing everyone. (What a surprise!) In 1946, she and Richard E. Hyde were married, and Richard, with his keen sense of humor, told their daughter in jest that she was barefoot when they met. He passed away in 1980 after 34 years of marriage.
LaRue was a retired Commonwealth supervisor with 19 years of service in the Comptroller’s Office of the Health Department. She also had 19 years of service in the Department of the Auditor General in Liquor Store Audits where, after a few years, she was promoted to Director and was responsible for 72 employees when she retired in 1978. She received the prestigious appointment as “Coordinator for the International Typographical Union Convention” held at the Hershey Convention Center in August 1986.
Continuing to serve others in her retirement, LaRue was an active member of the Colonial Park United Church of Christ, where she was named PR person for the photo directory, was former Treasurer for one year, Assistant Treasurer of the Bazaar for two years, served as Lay Minister for two years, and was Program Chair for four years. She was also a member and former President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary for the Retired Printers’ Club ITU #14; a member and Tour Director of the Ridgeview Garden Club; a member, Tour Director, former Director, Assistant Treasurer and 1997 Lioness of the Year with the Lower Paxton Lioness Club; member of Estrellita Chapter #512, OES; and Charter Member, Tour Chairperson, Board of Directors, former Treasurer, former Assistant Treasurer, and 1992 “Outstanding Community Services Award” recipient of AARP #4223.
In addition to her parents and her husband, LaRue was preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl Rewolinski. Surviving is her grandson, Ty Rewolinski, Harrisburg; her brother, Donald R. Bowers, Mesa, AZ; and dear friends.
Services will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, September 25, 2019 in her church, 5000 Devonshire Road, Harrisburg, with the Rev. Cindy Garis, her pastor, officiating. A luncheon will follow the services at the church.
Burial in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens will be held at the convenience of the family.
