Melvin I. Ludwig, 93, Camp Hill, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at Holy Spirit Hospital.
Born March 11, 1925 in Harrisburg, he was the son of Kathleen Foose and Charles Ludwig and was also preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice, his granddaughter, Jessica Snyder and his brothers, Edwin, John and Lloyd.
A veteran of WWII, he enlisted in the US Navy and served for four years. After receiving his discharge papers, he entered the Army, where he was stationed in the Philippines and Japan.
Melvin retired from Conrail (formerly the Reading Railroad) after 40 years. He also worked part time for Horstick’s Service Station on State Street.
He attended services at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Camp Hill and was a former member of the Lawnton American Legion, Post 0998. An avid bowler until just a few years ago, he bowled in many leagues since he was young, including the St. Margaret Mary team and teams at Trindle Bowl. Melvin enjoyed gardening and tinkering with minor car repairs; but mostly, he was someone who wanted to care for others. He would often take newspapers to and run errands for neighbors who were unable to leave their homes; and for many years cared for the feral cats around his property.
His beloved wife, Beatrice (Theador) Ludwig, passed away July 13, 2006, on what would have been their 60th wedding anniversary.
Surviving are his children: Thomas M. Ludwig, Camp Hill and Christina M. Weaver (and husband, George), Harrisburg; one grandson, David Weaver, Carbondale; one great grandson, Benjamin Snyder, Selinsgrove, and many nieces and their families.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Kimmel Funeral Home, 2001 Market Street, Harrisburg, where friends will be received from 10:30 am until 11:00 am. Burial with military honors will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Nobody’s Cats Foundation, 3909 Hartzdale Drive, Camp Hill, 17011.
