Surrounded by his loving family, Robert E. McCombs, 86, of Harrisburg, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Masonic Village, Elizabethtown.
Born January 26, 1931 in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Robert E. and Verna E. (Walmer) McCombs and was a 1949 graduate of John Harris High School.
Following graduation, Bob served in the US Navy for four years. He then went to work for Bell Telephone as a lineman, ultimately retiring after 33 years as an engineer. Even after retirement, he continued to volunteer for the Bell Telephone Pioneers installing medical alert systems.
On July 19, 1958, he married the former Shirley A. Lescallette, and they recently celebrated 58 years of marriage.
Bob and Shirley were members of Crosspoint United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where he was involved with the church’s food pantry at Messiah Lutheran Church. He enjoyed walking, bike riding and playing Suduko puzzles; but mostly, he was a simple family man. He made family time a priority; bike riding and picnics, vacations at Wildwood, and after his children were grown, playing “fix-it man” for them whenever he visited their homes. Bob and Shirley also made time for each other, travelling to Hawaii and Europe, going on cruises, and line-dancing.
Surviving is his beloved wife, Shirley A. McCombs; one son. Brian L. McCombs, Harrisburg; one daughter, Carol J. (and her husband, Michael) Keim, Wayne, PA; 2 sisters, Betty Harman, Elizabethtown and Nancy Collins, Camp Hill; 2 grandchildren, David M. Keim and Lisa M. Keim; nieces, nephews and many dear friends, all of whom will miss him greatly.
Services will be held 12:30 pm Friday, September 22, 2017 in his church, Crosspoint UMC, 430 Colonial Road, Harrisburg, 17109, with the Rev. David D. Biser and the Rev. Robert M. Lescallette officiating.
There will be a viewing at the church from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm.
Burial with military honors will be in Rolling Green Memorial Park, Camp Hill.
Contributions may be made in his honor to his church or to Masonic Village Hospice, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, 17022.
Kimmel Funeral Home, Harrisburg, is handling arrangements.
