Ruby M. McGee, 93, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2016 at Homeland Center, Harrisburg.
Born Ruby Mae Hampton on December 31, 1922 in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Ada (Davis) Hampton and Wade Hampton. She grew up in Kentucky and moved to West Virginia at the beginning of World War II. There she worked as a fabricator in the Fletcher Enamel Plant and met her husband, James E. McGee. Ruby and Jim were married November 27, 1945. They remained in West Virginia until 1964, then lived and traveled throughout the South. After the War and while living in West Virginia, Ruby worked in a junior high school cafeteria as a cook; she was well known for her Sloppy Joe and Peanut Butter Cookie recipes. Ruby held several positions in the retail clothing and dry cleaning industry and continued to work after the couple moved to the South.
Ruby was an accomplished seamstress, creating her own clothing designs and patterns for herself, her family and many, many dolls. Over the years, she accumulated lots of boxes of fabric scraps, finally putting those to good use by making many beautiful quilts for her friends and family. Those quilts continue to wrap her family in warmth and comfort.
Ruby is preceded in death by her husband, James, who passed away December 8, 2003 in Charleston, West Virginia.
One of nine children, Ruby was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters: Tebb, John, Tilin, Charles, Frank, Agnes, Orville and Betty.
Ruby is survived by her daughter, Dolores Ann McGee; grandson, Harry Christopher Cloxton; granddaughter, Vanessa Lynn Gambone and three great-grandchildren, Lily, Darrin and Hayden.
