Sandra L. (Bower) Shaeffer, “Lala” to her grandchildren, age 78, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at her home in West Hanover Township.
Born July 4, 1938 in Harrisburg, she was the daughter of the late Archie and Olene (Johnson) Bower and was a graduate of Susquehanna Township High School. Following graduation she attended Polyclinic Nursing School. She was the Librarian at Central Dauphin East High School in the 1970s, and was so well liked that the students would visit her regularly at her home. She also coached her daughters in softball for the West Hanover Softball Association. She went to work at the State and eventually retired as an Administrative Assistant.
She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hummelstown and volunteered with her husband for the Fort Hunter Society. Sandra was an avid reader and attended a book study club with her friends. She enjoyed cooking and painting, especially with watercolors, but her greatest joy came from caring for her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a baby daughter, Holly; her brothers: Donald Bower and Archie Bower, Jr.; 2 grandchildren: John Marlin Kline and Caitlin Elizabeth Shaeffer and 2 great grandchildren: Wyatt Fleisher and Luke Fleisher.
Surviving is her husband of 59 years, Robert M. Shaeffer; 2 daughters: Deanna (and her husband, Micheal) Hamilton, Dauphin and Tracey (and her husband, Joe) Spogli, Mechanicsburg; one son: Scott M. (and his wife, Liz) Shaeffer, Harrisburg; 7 grandchildren: Ashlee Folkemer, Mallory Fleisher, Lauren Roland, Ryan Shaeffer, Brooke Shaeffer, Laura Shaeffer, and Ethan Sgrignoli; 4 great grandchildren: Jacob Folkemer, Allyson Folkemer, Fallyn Fleisher and Jackson Fleisher, and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 1:30 pm Friday, December 23, 2016 in her church, 100 W. Main St. Hummelstown where there will be a visitation at 12:30 pm. The Rev. Lois K. Van Orden, her pastor, will be officiating. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
